Davao City Councilor Enzo Villafuerte has urged residents showing signs of scoliosis to seek early medical care, marking Scoliosis Awareness Month this June. Villafuerte, who chairs the Committee on Social Services, highlighted that scoliosis is widespread yet often unnoticed, leaving many unaware of their condition.
Scoliosis and Its Impact
Villafuerte described scoliosis as a serious condition that can affect posture, confidence, mobility, and overall quality of life. He emphasized that early detection through regular check-ups and screenings can lead to better treatment options and improved health outcomes.
Signs of scoliosis include uneven shoulders, an uneven waistline, or a leaning posture, according to the councilor. He noted that June is declared Scoliosis Awareness Month under Proclamation No. 620, series of 2018, signed by former President Rodrigo R. Duterte.
Call for Action and Support
During his privilege speech on June 23, 2026, at the Sangguniang Panlungsod, Villafuerte said, “Let this be an opportunity to eliminate the social stigma. As a community, we must foster an understanding rather than judgment. Awareness is not only about recognition but also taking action.” He encouraged a healthy lifestyle and urged everyone to seek medical advice when necessary to prevent complications.
Villafuerte also highlighted positive developments for scoliosis patients, including PhilHealth coverage for the full spectrum of care—from diagnosis to non-surgical management, physical therapy, and surgery for severe cases. He added that a pending bill, the National Scoliosis Care Act, aims to provide comprehensive support for those living with the condition.
Resolution and Global Context
The councilor passed a resolution supporting the commemoration of National Scoliosis Awareness Month 2026. Internationally, scoliosis affects two to three percent of the population and is prevalent in Europe, underscoring the need for awareness and early intervention.
