Oxfam Pilipinas Executive Director Lot Felizco warned that the Philippines' recent elevation to upper-middle-income status is hollow if millions remain poor, vulnerable to climate disasters, and excluded from public services. In a statement, Felizco emphasized that the country has proven it can grow economically, but the real test is whether that growth translates into tangible improvements for all citizens.
Deepening inequality and systemic corruption
Felizco pointed out that issues such as deepening inequality and systemic corruption continue to plague the nation. She argued that the milestone means little if Filipinos still face poverty, discrimination, and inability to recover from crises with dignity. The challenge now is to reduce inequality so every Filipino can share equally in the country's progress.
A call for equitable governance
“What we must ask our elected leaders is: Kailan madarama ng bawat Pilipino ang pag-asenso? Kailan magiging patas ang lipunan?” Felizco said, urging leaders to build a just society where the economy and governance work for everyone, not just a privileged few. She stressed that the new income category should compel the Philippines to rise to a higher standard of accountability and equity.
