Furukawa Electric Invests ₱17B in PH for AI Cooling

Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd. has announced a ₱17 billion investment in the Philippines to manufacture advanced heat sink modules and thermal management products. The project is expected to create approximately 4,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Expansion to Meet Global AI Demand

The expansion aims to address the rising global demand for high-performance cooling systems used in generative artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure. The plan was discussed during a meeting between President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Furukawa Electric President and CEO Hideya Moridaira on May 28.

Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque joined the meeting along with other company officials. The investment coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Philippines.

Details of the Investment

The project involves expanding Furukawa Electric Thermal Management Solutions and Products Laguna, Inc. (FTL) at the Laguna Technopark. The expansion will increase production capacity for high-performance heat sinks used to dissipate heat from CPUs and GPUs in data centers, driven by the rapid growth of the generative AI market.

This investment is part of Furukawa Electric’s broader capital expenditure program of approximately JPY 55 billion (about ₱20 billion), which includes investments in the Philippines and other countries.

Government and Industry Impact

Secretary Roque noted that the investment reflects growing Japanese confidence in the Philippines as a production base for advanced electronics and next-generation technologies. She emphasized that as industries worldwide invest in AI and digital infrastructure, the Philippines must strengthen its position in high-value manufacturing.

“Furukawa Electric’s investment in advanced heat sink modules and other thermal management products used in AI applications, data centers, and digital infrastructure supports that direction by creating jobs, facilitating technology transfer, and expanding local capabilities in advanced electronics production,” she said.

Future Cooperation

The discussions also highlighted opportunities for deeper cooperation in technology transfer, workforce development, supplier development, and advanced manufacturing capabilities. The meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism for continued expansion of Furukawa Electric’s operations in the Philippines and deeper Philippines-Japan cooperation in advanced manufacturing, electronics, and digital infrastructure industries.
