Aboitiz InfraCapital Implements Energy Emergency Measures Amid Crisis
Aboitiz InfraCapital's Energy Emergency Response and Initiatives

Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. (AIC), the infrastructure division of the Aboitiz Group, along with its business units, is proactively responding to the declared national energy emergency. These actions are designed to reduce disruptions for team members, stakeholders, and the general public, ensuring continued operational efficiency during this critical period.

Government Declaration and Corporate Response

On March 24, 2026, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. officially declared a state of national energy emergency. This decision was prompted by the ongoing conflict in the Persian Gulf, which poses a significant threat to the stability and availability of the Philippines' energy supply. In light of this, AIC has stepped up with targeted initiatives to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices on daily commutes and expenses.

Cosette V. Canilao, President and Chief Executive Officer of AIC, emphasized the company's commitment: "We recognize the challenges posed by increasing fuel costs and are implementing measures to alleviate this burden while maintaining our organizational cohesion and service delivery."

Adapting Work Arrangements and Stakeholder Support

To align with Malacañang's endorsement of flexible work-from-home proposals from the private sector, AIC Corporate and its Water business units have adjusted their hybrid work policies. Specifically, Apo Agua Infrastructura, Inc. and LIMA Water Corporation have shifted to a schedule of three days onsite and two days remote, ensuring no disruption to operations. Apo Agua operates the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project, the country's largest bulk water facility, in partnership with the Davao City Water District, while LIMA Water provides comprehensive water and wastewater services for LIMA Estate in Batangas. Additionally, a nearby staffhouse has been arranged for the convenience of LIMA Water Operations team members.

Beyond internal adjustments, AIC is addressing the effects of the energy emergency and Middle East conflict on key stakeholders. At Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), the largest gateway outside Manila, passenger support has been enhanced. This includes the recent opening of an in-terminal Department of Migrant Workers Overseas Filipino Workers Facilitation Center in Terminal 2, in collaboration with Cebu Pacific Air. This center offers on-site assistance and services like Overseas Employment Certification filing, aiding OFWs returning from evacuations in the Middle East.

Furthermore, Apo Agua has transitioned to fully virtual and online transactions for out-of-town suppliers and contractors, eliminating the need for manual check pick-ups. This move reduces travel to and from Davao City, conserving fuel and improving transaction efficiency.

Driving Resource Efficiency and Sustainability

AIC is bolstering energy resilience across its operations through efficient and sustainable practices. At the corporate headquarters in Makati City and MCIA in Lapu-Lapu City, initiatives such as daily shutdowns of main lighting and air-conditioning systems at 6 PM are in place, supporting the Department of Energy's #EnerhiyangMatatagAtMakatao campaign for national energy conservation.

Operationally, LIMA Water utilizes a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system that automatically adjusts equipment based on real-time demand, optimizing energy use and minimizing waste. This system also enables continuous monitoring and remote control, reducing on-site interventions and lowering fuel costs.

Across AIC Airports, sustainability efforts are prioritized without compromising service quality. MCIA generates energy from rooftop solar panels and uses bridge-mounted equipment to allow aircraft to draw power at boarding gates, cutting emissions and auxiliary power unit fuel use. Increased direct flights nationwide further reduce fuel consumption from connecting travel.

At Bohol-Panglao International Airport and Laguindingan International Airport, energy-efficient designs maximize natural lighting and ventilation, decreasing operational energy demands. All three airports—MCIA, BPIA, and LIA—participated in the 20th #EarthHour2026 on March 28, darkening passenger terminals for an hour to conserve energy and promote climate action. This contributed to a nationwide load reduction of 145.43 MW, underscoring AIC's commitment to environmental stewardship during the energy crisis.
