Cebu Bus Terminals Suspend Free Rides Amid Fuel Price Surge and Holy Week Preparations

In a significant development for commuters, the Cebu North and South Bus Terminals have temporarily suspended their "Libre’ng Sakay" or free ride program. This decision comes as authorities ramp up preparations for the anticipated influx of passengers during the upcoming Holy Week, a peak travel period in the Philippines.

Fuel Costs Drive Decision to Halt Free Services

Terminal Administrator Ahmed Cuizon, speaking on March 24, 2026, identified the continuous rise in fuel prices across the nation as the primary reason for the suspension of free rides. He emphasized that the escalating costs have made it financially challenging to maintain such services at this time. "We are not planning free rides currently because fuel prices are too high," Cuizon stated, highlighting the economic pressures facing transportation operations.

No Satellite Terminals Planned, Direct Travel Advised

Cuizon also clarified that there are no immediate plans to open satellite terminals to alleviate congestion. Instead, he urged all passengers to proceed directly to the main terminals to streamline operations. "We are not planning satellite terminals because people are coming directly here. We just have to wait... especially since fuel is expensive," he explained, underscoring the focus on centralizing services to manage resources efficiently.

Contingency Measures for High Demand Periods

However, Cuizon assured the public that the free ride program could be reinstated if there is a substantial increase in the need for additional buses or if passenger numbers surge dramatically during Holy Week. This contingency plan aims to provide flexibility in responding to unexpected travel demands.

Enhancements for Passenger Comfort and Safety

To ensure a smoother travel experience, terminal management has implemented several improvements:

  • Additional air-conditioning units have been installed to reduce heat and enhance comfort for waiting passengers.
  • More staff have been deployed to maintain cleanliness and order within the terminal facilities.

Public Advisory for Efficient Travel

Authorities are strongly encouraging travelers to plan their journeys during early morning or dawn hours. This proactive measure is designed to help avoid severe traffic congestion and overcrowding, ensuring a safer and more pleasant trip for everyone. By heeding this advice, passengers can contribute to a more organized and efficient terminal environment during the busy Holy Week season.
