Cebu City Takes Action on Energy Conservation During National Emergency
In response to a national energy emergency declared by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Cebu City has swiftly implemented a series of energy-saving measures to mitigate the impact of power and fuel shortages. City officials are actively collaborating with national agencies to ensure that essential services remain uninterrupted while reducing overall consumption.
Contingency Plans and Collaborative Efforts
The Cebu Provincial Government has assured the public that contingency measures are already in place to sustain basic services, including fuel supply, transportation, and essential goods. This proactive approach aims to minimize disruptions and support the community during this critical period.
In an interview, Mayor Nestor Archival highlighted that the City Hall has initiated its own conservation efforts. Key actions include turning off air conditioning units during midday hours, a move that has previously saved approximately P80,000 per month. Additionally, starting at 4:00 PM, elevators and lighting in selected offices will be gradually shut down to further reduce energy usage.
Long-Term Goals and National Partnership
These measures are part of a broader partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE) under a five-year program. The primary objective is to decrease electricity consumption in government buildings by at least 10 percent. This initiative not only addresses immediate shortages but also promotes sustainable practices for long-term energy efficiency.
By integrating local actions with national strategies, Cebu City is setting an example for other municipalities to follow in managing energy crises. The combined efforts are expected to enhance resilience and ensure that vital services continue to operate smoothly despite the ongoing challenges.
