New Consumer Alliance Launches in Bacolod to Tackle Power Challenges
A coalition of empowered consumers and church workers is set to launch the Alliance of Consumers in Northern Negros (ACNN) on February 14, 2026, in Bacolod City. This initiative aims to address pressing issues in the power sector, particularly in the face of projected electricity shortfalls.
Addressing Power Industry Challenges
Wennie Sancho, president of the Alliance of Concerned Consumers in Electricity and Social Services (Access), highlighted that the ACNN General Assembly will be assisted by Access and Power Watch Negros Advocates. He emphasized that the forum is crucial for preparing electricity consumers in northern Negros to confront challenges in the power industry.
Sancho stated, "This forum is in preparation for the electricity consumers in northern Negros to face the challenges of the power industry, particularly on the projected shortfall of electricity in the Visayas, including Negros Island Region, as announced by National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) and Department of Energy (DOE)."
Key Discussions and Partnerships
The assembly will delve into critical topics, including the partnership between Negros Power and Northern Negros Electric Cooperative (Noneco). This collaboration seeks to strengthen power infrastructure and services, promising significant benefits for consumers.
Sancho noted that this partnership is expected to bring infrastructure upgrades, reduce outages, and provide more reliable and affordable electricity for over 200,000 consumers spanning from E. B. Magalona to San Carlos.
Legal Induction and Consumer Protection
Lawyer Arnel Lapore will officiate the induction of elected and appointed officials of ACNN. Sancho explained that this move aims to integrate technical expertise, capital innovation, and continuous consumer consultation to safeguard consumer interests.
He added, "This would bring in technical expertise, capital innovation and continuous consumers consultation to ensure that the interests of the consumers are protected."
A Movement for Consumer Empowerment
Sancho described ACNN as more than just an alliance; it is a movement toward a brighter future for northern Negros. He envisions a scenario where every electricity consumer has a voice and a choice in building a more resilient and consumer-centric power sector.
Through education and awareness programs, ACNN aims to empower informed consumers, viewing them as key to achieving sustainable and equitable energy solutions.
Sancho concluded, "A new consumer movement in northern Negros is rising for consumer empowerment and protection."
