President Marcos Confirms Adequate Crude Oil Supply Through June 2026
In a press briefing on Friday, March 27, 2026, President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. provided a crucial update on the nation's energy stability, assuring the public that the Philippines maintains a sufficient supply of crude oil until the end of June 2026. This announcement comes as the government intensifies efforts to procure oil imports amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, which threaten global energy markets.
Government Efforts to Mitigate Energy Crisis Impacts
President Marcos emphasized the administration's proactive measures, stating, We already have a supply of crude oil, sufficient supply, until June 30... our search for additional supply continues, and we are steadfast in supporting our commuters to alleviate the burden caused by the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. This reassurance aims to calm concerns over potential fuel shortages that could disrupt daily life and economic activities.
Supporting this claim, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued a statement confirming the arrival of the first shipment under its Emergency Energy Security Program. This delivery includes approximately 22,578,000 liters or 142,000 barrels of diesel, marking a significant step in fortifying the country's oil reserves.
DOE's Strategic Initiatives for National Security
According to the DOE, this imported diesel is part of a broader government strategy to enhance national oil security and cushion the impact of external market disruptions. The department highlighted its focus on sectors heavily reliant on petroleum products, such as transportation and industry, to ensure minimal interruption to operations.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin elaborated, The DOE remains committed to increasing the country's oil supply. The swift arrival of this diesel is a key measure to prevent delays in travel, livelihoods, and the everyday lives of every Filipino. This underscores the administration's dedication to maintaining economic stability and public welfare during uncertain times.
Industry Challenges and Senate Hearing Insights
However, challenges persist within the private sector. During a Senate hearing on March 26 under the Proactive Response and Oversight for Timely and Effective Crisis Strategy (Protect), industry leaders voiced concerns. Pongtorn Tangmanuswong, President of Chevron Philippines Inc., reported that their oil supply is only sufficient until the last week of April, with no confirmed shipments for May yet.
Similarly, Lorelie Quiambao-Osial, President of Shell Pilipinas Corporation, acknowledged difficulties in meeting government-mandated inventory levels due to supply shortages. These admissions highlight the ongoing pressures faced by oil companies amid global supply chain constraints.
As the Philippines navigates this energy landscape, the government's assurances and actions will be critical in safeguarding against potential crises and ensuring a stable supply chain for essential fuels.
