Meralco Implements Electricity Rate Increase for February Consumers

Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has announced a significant adjustment in electricity charges for the month of February, resulting in higher bills for its consumers. The utility company has implemented an additional charge of P0.22 per kilowatt hour (kWh), primarily attributed to elevated transmission costs.

Details of the Rate Adjustment

The overall electricity rate for typical households has risen to P13.1734 per kWh, up from P12.9508 per kWh in January. This increase means that consumers with an average consumption of 200 kWh will notice an additional P45 on their monthly bills. The adjustment reflects ongoing changes in the energy market and infrastructure expenses.

Causes Behind the Higher Charges

Meralco explained that the rate hike is mainly due to a surge in transmission charges, which reached P0.1975 per kWh. This increase stems from higher ancillary service charges in the Reserve Market, incurred by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, along with elevated power delivery service charges. Additionally, the Universal Charge for Missionary Electrification (UCME) has increased by P0.27 per kWh, supporting subsidies for remote areas not connected to the main power grid.

Mitigating Factors in the Rate Change

Despite the overall increase, some components provided relief to consumers. The generation charge decreased by P0.1073 per kWh, settling at P7.6398 per kWh. Meralco also noted a reduction in charges from independent power producers (IPPs) by P0.8108 per kWh, which helped offset rises from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) and power supply agreements (PSAs). This balancing act demonstrates the complex interplay of factors influencing electricity pricing.

Impact on Household Budgets

The rate adjustment is expected to affect millions of households across the Meralco service area. Consumers are advised to monitor their electricity usage and consider energy-saving measures to manage costs. The company continues to emphasize transparency in billing and encourages customers to stay informed about future rate changes.
