Power Generation Holds Strong Amid Typhoon Tino's Fury

MERALCO PowerGen Corporation (MGEN) has demonstrated remarkable resilience as its power facilities in the Visayas region withstood the impact of Typhoon Tino, internationally known as Kalmaegi. The typhoon brought destructive winds and heavy rainfall to areas including Cebu and Panay, causing significant disruption to communities throughout the region.

The company has expressed solidarity with affected residents while acknowledging the tireless work of local government units, emergency response teams, and volunteer organizations delivering crucial relief and restoration support to impacted areas.

Operational Stability During Severe Weather

MGEN maintained continuous operations across its Visayas power generation assets despite the challenging weather conditions. In Cebu, the company operates through Cebu Energy Development Corporation (CEDC) with three generating units and Toledo Power Co. (TPC) with one unit. The Panay presence includes Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC) in Iloilo operating three units and Panay Power Corporation (PPC) in Aklan with two generating units.

The thermal power generation infrastructure proved largely stable during the typhoon, providing essential support to system requirements. On November 4, a TPC unit experienced a temporary trip at 7:38 a.m. but was successfully restored and synchronized to the national grid by 8:37 p.m. the same day through coordinated efforts with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

All other units at CEDC, PEDC, and PPC facilities remained fully operational throughout the weather disturbance. Initial damage assessments revealed no significant infrastructure damage, with only minor corrective maintenance required to ensure complete operational readiness.

Employee Safety and System Reliability

The safety and welfare of MGEN personnel remained the company's top priority during the typhoon emergency. All employees working at affected sites have been confirmed safe and accounted for, with the company providing necessary support to team members requiring assistance due to the severe weather conditions.

MGEN continues to coordinate closely with NGCP, relevant government agencies, and energy sector stakeholders to maintain system stability and reinforce critical power infrastructure as recovery efforts progress across typhoon-affected communities.

The company has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country's energy system through operational discipline, preparedness measures, and infrastructure resilience as communities begin rebuilding in the aftermath of Typhoon Tino.
