Philippine Airlines President Unveils Strategic Growth and Service Enhancement Initiatives
Richard Nuttall, president of Philippine Airlines, delivered a comprehensive address outlining the national flag carrier's ambitious expansion plans and customer experience improvements during the awards ceremony for the 77th Philippine Airlines Interclub Golf Tournament. The event took place at the SMX Convention Center in Davao on Friday, March 6, 2026.
Record Performance and Ambitious Goals
Nuttall highlighted PAL's significant achievements in 2025, coinciding with the airline's 85th anniversary celebration. The airline achieved a major milestone by ranking number one in the Asia-Pacific region for on-time performance, a result Nuttall attributed to substantial operational improvements and enhanced teamwork across all departments.
The president also reported strong customer satisfaction metrics, with the airline's Net Promoter Score (NPS) reaching 48 in 2025. Nuttall emphasized that this represents a robust performance compared to other global carriers and reflects growing passenger loyalty.
Recognition and Future Aspirations
Philippine Airlines earned a four-star airline rating from the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX), positioning the carrier near the top tier of global airlines. However, Nuttall expressed determination to achieve even higher standards, telling the audience: "Frankly, we're not quite satisfied with that. We're looking for one more star next year."
Network Expansion and Cultural Integration
In 2025, PAL expanded its network by adding six new destinations while incorporating more elements of Filipino culture into the onboard experience. Nuttall specifically mentioned the airline's innovative in-flight safety video, styled as a Filipino "novela," which has garnered millions of views online and represents the carrier's commitment to showcasing Philippine culture.
Fleet Modernization and Service Enhancements
Looking ahead to 2026, Nuttall detailed PAL's ongoing fleet modernization program. The airline recently introduced the Airbus A350-1000 as its new flagship long-haul jet and expects five additional units of this aircraft to join the fleet in coming years. PAL will also take delivery of five more Airbus A320 aircraft to strengthen regional and domestic operations.
As part of its broader service strategy, the airline is working to enhance the Mabuhay Miles loyalty program while improving onboard food and beverage offerings. Nuttall articulated the company's vision: "Our vision going forward is clear. We want to be globally recognized, trusted for our world-class excellence, remembered for heartfelt care, and celebrated for bringing Filipino hospitality to every journey."
Demonstrating New Capabilities
PAL recently showcased the capabilities of its new A350-1000 aircraft with a special domestic flight to Davao City. This demonstration allowed passengers in Mindanao to experience the airline's upgraded cabins and in-flight amenities typically reserved for long-haul routes. Airline officials noted that this aircraft represents PAL's strategic push to compete more effectively in the premium and long-haul travel market while reinforcing its identity as the Philippines' national flag carrier.
Nuttall delivered his remarks before an audience of golfers, sponsors, and guests gathered to celebrate the country's longest-running amateur team golf championship. This year's tournament attracted 214 teams from across the Philippines and overseas, providing an appropriate backdrop for discussing PAL's national and international aspirations.
