Speaker Dy: Oil Crisis Exposes PH Weakness, Urges Alternatives

House Speaker Warns Oil Crisis Exposes Philippines' Critical Vulnerability

House Speaker Faustino "Bojie" G. Dy III has emphatically stated that the current oil crisis has starkly revealed the profound weakness of the Philippines due to its excessive reliance on imported petroleum products. According to Speaker Dy, a staggering 95% of the nation's petroleum supply is imported from foreign countries, rendering the Philippines highly vulnerable to any disruptions in global supply or sudden price hikes in the international market.

Urgent Call for Diversification and Domestic Alternatives

"We are 95% dependent on imports for our petroleum products, which makes us very vulnerable," declared Speaker Dy. "Therefore, we must develop alternatives. One significant alternative I have mentioned to our president is natural gas. Our province holds substantial natural gas reserves, particularly in areas like Santiago, San Isidro, and Echague. These can serve as alternative power sources so that, in the event of another crisis or supply halt, we have other options and are not solely reliant on oil products originating from the Middle East."

The Speaker highlighted the considerable potential of natural gas as an alternative energy source, especially in identified reserve areas within Isabela. He emphasized that leveraging these domestic resources could significantly reduce the nation's dependence on imported oil, particularly from Middle Eastern regions.

Legislative Response and Multi-Committee Hearings Planned

Meanwhile, House Ways and Means Chairman and Marikina Representative Miro Quimbo described the ongoing crisis as a crucial "wake-up call" to accelerate the country's transition to diverse energy sources. He further announced that 13 House committees are scheduled to conduct joint hearings to formulate comprehensive measures addressing the crisis's impact across various economic sectors.

Participating committees include those focused on Energy, Agriculture, Foreign Affairs, Labor, Transportation, and Trade and Industry, among others. Beyond promoting alternative energy development—such as solar, geothermal, and natural gas—Quimbo also proposed establishing a national petroleum reserve. This strategic reserve would ensure sufficient supply and mitigate the severe effects of future price surges.

Emphasis on Energy Security and Sustainable Solutions

In summary, the lawmakers strongly underscored the immediate necessity to strengthen the nation's resilience against external energy crises. They advocate for a broader, more sustainable mix of electricity and fuel sources to enhance energy security and reduce dependency on volatile international markets.
