Metro Dumaguete Water is intensifying efforts to enhance operational efficiency as escalating fuel prices, driven by the ongoing Middle East crisis, threaten to significantly increase water production costs. The utility company, which serves more than 30,000 households and accounts across its service area, relies on 22 deep wells powered by diesel pumps to extract water from aquifers.
Projected Cost Doubling and Consumer Impact
Chief Operating Officer Engr. Robert R. Cabiles has issued a stark warning: if the conflict in the Middle East persists, fuel prices could surge beyond P80 per liter, potentially doubling the cost of delivering water to consumers. This price hike directly affects the company's operations, as diesel and gasoline are essential not only for water extraction but also for powering other equipment and motor vehicles.
Call for Responsible Water Use
In response to these rising operational expenses, Cabiles has urged consumers to practice responsible water usage. "While operating costs continue to rise, we call on our consumers to observe responsible water use to contribute to the sustainability of our groundwater sources and reliable service," he emphasized. This appeal aims to foster community cooperation in mitigating the financial strain on the utility.
Efficiency Measures and Infrastructure Investments
Despite the challenges, Metro Dumaguete Water is proactively implementing strategies to curb costs and maintain service reliability. The company has achieved a notable milestone: a 7% reduction in power consumption while simultaneously increasing water production for customers. This efficiency gain is crucial as water utilities nationwide grapple with the ripple effects of oil price volatility.
To further bolster operational resilience, the utility is investing in key infrastructure developments:
- Electromechanical upgrades at pumping stations to slash energy usage.
- Pipeline rehabilitation projects to minimize water losses and enhance distribution.
These initiatives are designed to ensure consistent water production and delivery in a cost-effective manner, even amid unpredictable fuel price fluctuations.
Commitment to Service Amid Challenges
Cabiles reaffirmed the company's dedication to its mission, stating, "Metro Dumaguete Water reaffirms its commitment to provide safe and reliable water supply for Dumaguete City, even as it continues to navigate through the higher cost of production in this unusual time." This pledge underscores the utility's focus on balancing financial pressures with its essential public service role, ensuring that residents continue to receive uninterrupted access to clean water despite external economic shocks.
