The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is set to broaden its cash relief assistance program for public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers across the Philippines, with distribution expanding beyond the National Capital Region (NCR) immediately after Holy Week. This strategic move aims to cushion the severe economic impact of recent oil price hikes on the livelihoods of transport workers nationwide.
Post-Holy Week Rollout for Regional Drivers
Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao, the DSWD spokesperson, confirmed in a Sunday news release that the agency is actively preparing for this next phase of implementation. "Our target is to start right after Holy Week. Right now, we have not yet seen the total number of drivers in different parts of our country," Dumlao stated. She emphasized that once comprehensive data is gathered, the DSWD will meticulously plan the distribution timeline to ensure efficient and complete coverage.
Ongoing and Upcoming Payouts in Metro Manila
While gearing up for the national expansion, the DSWD continues its ongoing cash aid distributions within the NCR. Following the initial payout of PHP5,000 to tricycle drivers last week, the agency has scheduled a series of disbursements for other PUV driver categories starting March 24.
The detailed schedule includes:
- Tuesday: Assistance for 27,635 transport network vehicle service drivers.
- Wednesday: Payouts for over 21,700 public utility jeepney drivers.
- March 26-27: Cash aid for an estimated 137,700 delivery riders.
- March 28: Support for approximately 27,600 motorcycle taxi drivers.
Presidential Directive and Verification Measures
Dumlao highlighted that this initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to assist all drivers grappling with financial hardships due to soaring petroleum prices. "President Marcos Jr. wants to help all our drivers who are facing problems due to the increase in the price of petroleum," she added.
To guarantee a swift and systematic distribution process, the DSWD has implemented rigorous verification protocols. These measures mandate the physical presence of beneficiaries and thorough identity validation to prevent duplication and discrepancies in the beneficiary lists.
Coordination with Other Sectors and Agencies
The DSWD noted that other affected sectors are receiving support through partner agencies. Taxi drivers are being assisted by the Department of Transportation, while farmers and fisherfolk are under the purview of the Department of Agriculture. This multi-agency approach ensures comprehensive aid coverage across various vulnerable groups impacted by economic fluctuations.
Guidelines for Drivers
Meanwhile, the DSWD urged all eligible drivers to proactively coordinate with their local government units and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board. This step is crucial to ensure their inclusion in the official beneficiary roster.
Drivers are also reminded to adhere strictly to their designated payout schedules and to bring a valid driver's license along with a photocopy when claiming their cash assistance. These precautions are designed to streamline the process and minimize delays, ensuring that aid reaches those in need promptly and efficiently.
