Labor Group Slams DOLE Official for Opposing Wage Hike, Accusing Him of Defending Employers
On Thursday, April 2, 2026, the Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa (Sentro) issued a sharp rebuke against a high-ranking official from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). The labor group criticized Labor Undersecretary Benedicto Ernesto Bitonio Jr. for what they described as acting as a spokesperson for the employers sector rather than advocating for worker welfare.
Sentro Condemns Rejection of Substantial Wage Increase
In a strongly worded statement, Sentro expressed outrage over Bitonio's dismissal of calls for a significant nationwide wage hike. The group highlighted the timing of his remarks, noting that workers are currently grappling with soaring prices and economic hardship. "At a time when workers are crushed by rising prices, a key labor official in government is busy explaining why there should be no nationwide wage hike," Sentro declared.
The labor organization emphasized that such a stance is particularly troubling coming from a DOLE undersecretary. "It’s disturbing to consistently hear a DOLE official, an acting labor undersecretary for that matter, talk about wages as if he were the spokesperson of employers," the group stated, underscoring the perceived conflict of interest.
Contrast with DOLE's Mandate
Sentro argued that Bitonio's comments starkly contrast with the fundamental role of the Department of Labor and Employment. "The job of the DOLE is not to rationalize poverty wages or repeat the talking points of business groups. Workers expect DOLE to fight for a living wage," the group asserted. They called for a shift in focus toward addressing the financial struggles of minimum wage earners.
Challenge to Undersecretary Bitonio
To drive home their point, Sentro issued a direct challenge to Undersecretary Bitonio. They urged him to experience the daily realities faced by low-income workers. "Perhaps the Undersecretary should try living the life of a minimum wage earner—even for just a day. He might then understand why workers are demanding a real wage increase," Sentro suggested, aiming to foster empathy and awareness.
Background on Wage Increase Decision
This criticism follows earlier statements from Bitonio, who confirmed that there will be no national wage increase implemented on May 1. He explained that the DOLE continues to rely on regional wage boards to handle wage-related concerns, a approach that Sentro views as inadequate in the face of nationwide economic pressures.
The labor group's outcry reflects broader tensions over wage policies and the government's role in protecting worker interests amid inflationary challenges.
