PhilHealth Considers Premium Collection Suspension Following Senator Marcos' Call
PhilHealth May Suspend Premium Collections Amid Crisis

PhilHealth Weighs Temporary Halt to Premium Collections After Senator's Appeal

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, commonly known as PhilHealth, announced yesterday that it is actively considering a temporary suspension of premium contribution collections. This move comes in direct response to a recent call from Senator Imee Marcos, who urged government agencies to provide financial relief to workers amid the ongoing Middle East crisis.

Consultations Underway with Government Agencies

PhilHealth revealed that it is currently engaged in consultations with various government agencies to explore the feasibility of suspending deductions from worker wages. The state-run health insurer emphasized that it is in contact with economic managers and is awaiting further guidance from Malacañang regarding additional potential measures.

"We ensure that any decision will remain in accordance with the law to maintain stable services for every member," PhilHealth stated, underscoring its commitment to legal compliance while addressing the urgent needs of its members.

Immediate Relief Through Penalty Waiver Program

In the interim, PhilHealth is encouraging direct contributors to take advantage of a one-time waiver of interest for unpaid premium contributions. This program specifically targets employers with missed premium contributions covering the period from July 2013 to December 2024.

Under this initiative, employers and self-paying members can settle their obligations within a dedicated one-year window without incurring penalties. "As an immediate relief, a one-time waiver of premium penalties for past-due premiums of employers and self-paying members is currently being implemented," PhilHealth explained.

The agency further urged eligible contributors to utilize this penalty condonation scheme to alleviate their financial burdens. "We encourage direct contributors to take advantage of this penalty condonation scheme to ease their expenses," PhilHealth added.

Senator Marcos' Call for Broader Suspension

Earlier, Senator Imee Marcos had called on multiple government agencies, including the Social Security System (SSS), Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG), and PhilHealth, to implement a temporary suspension of collections.

Marcos argued that temporarily halting salary deductions would enable workers to receive their full wages, thereby helping them better manage the escalating cost of living. Her appeal highlights the growing concern over economic pressures faced by Filipino workers, particularly in light of the Middle East crisis.

The potential suspension of PhilHealth premium collections represents a significant step toward providing financial respite, though the final decision hinges on ongoing discussions with government stakeholders. As the situation develops, PhilHealth remains focused on balancing regulatory adherence with the welfare of its members during these challenging times.
