The Zamboanga City Government has officially launched its Summer Program for Employment of Students (SPES) with a substantial P19 million allocation for this year's implementation. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the local government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), aimed at providing temporary employment opportunities for students and out-of-school youth.
Orientation Event for First Batch of Beneficiaries
On Tuesday, April 14, the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) conducted an orientation session for the first batch of SPES beneficiaries at the Vitaliano Agan Coliseum in Tetuan village, Zamboanga City. This event marked the final step before the students are deployed to various government offices for a 20-day employment period.
Program Details and Financial Allocation
Marinyd Tingcang, the PESO manager, disclosed that the city government's P19 million funding will support the program, with the first batch comprising 2,500 students. Under SPES, each beneficiary will receive a daily wage of P639.14, totaling P12,782.80 for the entire service duration. The City Government will cover 60 percent of the salaries, while DOLE will contribute the remaining 40 percent.
Workplace Preparation and Official Messages
The orientation session equipped students with essential knowledge for entering the local workforce. Topics covered included occupational safety and health standards, as well as the specific roles, duties, and responsibilities expected of the beneficiaries. Mayor Khymer Olaso, in a message read by City Administrator Percival Ramos, encouraged the students to embrace the opportunity, emphasizing punctuality, dedication, and integrity in their work.
Program Objectives and Impact
SPES serves as a bridging program by DOLE, designed to provide temporary employment to deserving students and out-of-school youth. This initiative helps them pursue their education through income-earning opportunities, fostering skill development and financial independence. The program's launch underscores Zamboanga City's commitment to supporting youth employment and education.
