School Opening Brings Hope and Challenges for Students and Parents
School Opening Brings Hope and Challenges

The school bell will ring loud and clear this Monday, May 8, 2026, as classes officially open across the region. Communities are moving in unison: teachers and parents under the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) are working hard through Brigada Eskwela. They are painting, repairing broken chairs, and cleaning classrooms to ensure a comfortable learning environment for children. Several private companies have also dedicated time and employees as part of their corporate social responsibility to assist in the cleanup.

However, behind these efforts lies a heavier challenge that often accompanies every school opening. First is the expected severe traffic congestion. With the return to school, public vehicles will become even more crowded with students, while private cars of parents dropping off their children will also increase. This is a call for workers to leave home early to avoid being late for work. Traffic is a huge waste of time and productivity.

Parents also bear significant sacrifices. While children are excited, adults must work doubly hard to meet daily allowances, fares, and additional expenses for school supplies and projects. Amid economic hardship, education remains an expensive investment.

Beyond physical preparation and financial challenges, a major change this year involves academics. According to DepEd Region 7 Director Dr. Arturo Bayocot, aside from Brigada Eskwela, teachers are undergoing intensive training for the revised curriculum, especially for Senior High School.

The annual school opening is not just a ritual of cleaning schools or buying new uniforms. It reflects how ready the government is to support the future of the next generation. Hopefully, when school doors open this Monday, not only will classrooms be improved, but the system will also be ready to provide a genuine and quality future for all.
