Special Needs Student Makes History with Gold Win in Baking Contest

In a groundbreaking achievement, John Fritz Lorence A. Guiao, a Grade 9 student enrolled in the Special Education (Sped) inclusion program, has led his team to a first-place finish in the "Bake Cares" competition during the Division Festival of Talents (DFOT) held on February 12, 2026. This victory marks the first time Talisay City has included a student with special needs in the cake-making and decoration event under the Bread and Pastry Production (BPP) category, setting a new standard for inclusivity in educational contests.

Overcoming Initial Hesitations

Initially, the team's coach, Melody Jane R. Gabia, expressed concerns about integrating a student with special needs into the rigorous training schedule. "I was afraid at first and hesitant, knowing that a student with needs may have tantrums and might affect the training," Gabia admitted. However, with guidance from their Sped teacher, Sharon Pimentel, her confidence grew as she witnessed Guiao's capabilities firsthand.

During training sessions that began in January, Gabia quickly realized that Guiao performed at par with his regular-education teammates, Avegail J. Bayno and Shannel Claire C. Navaja. "I noticed that Fritz can work even without supervision and he is very trainable," she added, highlighting his independence and adaptability.

Navigating Challenges on the Path to Victory

The team's journey to the gold medal was fraught with obstacles, including rigorous schedules, weather disturbances, and last-minute changes to contest guidelines. Despite these hurdles, the students demonstrated unwavering dedication. Gabia shared, "The students will chat to me that they want to practice despite class suspensions; they are very eager to learn and master the skills." This perseverance paid off as they excelled in the Bread and Pastry Production-Baking and Decoration contest, showcasing teamwork and skill.

Future Aspirations and Regional Ambitions

Following their historic win, the team is not resting on their laurels. They plan to intensify their training and acquire specialized tools as they prepare to represent the division in the upcoming Regional Festival of Talents (RFOT) 2026. This next step aims to further prove that differences are no barrier to excellence, inspiring greater inclusion in educational and competitive settings.

This achievement underscores the importance of inclusive programs in fostering talent and breaking down barriers, serving as a model for other schools and communities.
