Historic Paintings by Boy Peña Find Permanent Home at Museo Dabawenyo
In a significant move to bolster Davao City's cultural heritage, two historically important paintings by artist and author Aurelio "Boy" Peña have been officially transferred to Museo Dabawenyo. The formal turnover ceremony took place on March 31, 2026, at the museum located on Mabini Street, marking a pivotal moment in efforts to preserve and share the city's rich past with the public.

The event featured Aurelio "Boy" Peña, the creator of the artworks, alongside Museo Dabawenyo Officer-in-Charge Jason Arceo, who accepted the donations on behalf of the institution. The turnover was spearheaded by Pilar C. Braga, chairperson of the Datu Bago Awardees Organization, Inc. (DBAOI), who played a crucial role in facilitating the donation. Braga emphasized that selecting Museo Dabawenyo as the repository ensures these cultural treasures are accessible for educational purposes and public appreciation.
Artworks and Their Historical Significance
The donated pieces are oil-on-canvas paintings that vividly portray two critical episodes from Davao City's early history. "1848 Battle for Davao" captures the intense conflict at Bucana near the Bankerohan River, where Datu Bago's forces valiantly resisted Spanish troops commanded by Don José Oyanguren. Meanwhile, "Oyanguren Landing at Malipano Island" illustrates Oyanguren's arrival in Samal as he sought alliances with local communities, highlighting the strategic interactions that shaped the region's development.
Motivations Behind the Donation
Originally, Peña gifted the paintings to Braga, who later decided to donate them to the people of Davao City to ensure broader access. This initiative aligns with the goals of The 1848 Group, an advocacy platform known as Istorya Dabaw, which focuses on promoting awareness of the city's history through storytelling and exploration of landmarks. Katrina Lazaraga of The 1848 Group explained that the donation stems from a shared commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of Davao's historical roots.
