In a heartfelt reflection on Easter celebrations, the founder of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Dramatics and Cultural Ensemble recently shared cherished moments with family, highlighting a lifelong passion for music that has shaped a remarkable cultural legacy. The founder enjoyed an Easter treat with sister Leda and her spouse, Ed Zaragoza, bonding over their shared love for music, which has been a constant thread throughout their lives.
A Romantic Beginning and Musical Expansion
From childhood, the founder has always been an incurable romantic, deeply moved by songs like "Special Memories," which captivated with its melody, lyrics, and imagery. This early affection for music inspired the transformation of the then CSJR Little Theater into the USJ-R Dramatics and Cultural Ensemble. Under the guidance of Fr. Victor Lluch, who later served as adviser to the CSJR Dramatics Guild, the group began presenting musicales, laying the foundation for future artistic endeavors.
Support and Growth Through the Years
All subsequent father rectors and presidents of the institution provided unwavering support for Broadway and movie musicales, enabling the ensemble to flourish. This backing allowed the group to expand its reach and impact, fostering a vibrant community of performers and enthusiasts.
Friendship and Global Performances
The founder also reminisced about a lunch with close friends Aida Uy and Nelia Neri, where their mutual love for beautiful music was celebrated. Aida even taught the founder a few Chinese songs, enriching their cultural exchange. Over the years, alumni of the USJ-R Dramatics and Cultural Ensemble have spread across the globe, forming their own drama groups and emerging as influential business and political leaders, a development the founder finds immensely rewarding.
International Tours and Collaborations
Friends and supporters played a crucial role in the ensemble's success, backing shows both locally and internationally. The group traveled extensively, performing in destinations such as Hawaii, Utah, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Broadway, Singapore, China, India, and Indonesia. Additionally, collaborations with the Cebu City Tourism Commission, then led by colleagues Renato Osmeña and Nelia Neri, further showcased the ensemble's talent and cultural contributions.
Reflections on Unheard Melodies
In a poetic conclusion, the founder referenced Percy Bysshe Shelley's words, "Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter," suggesting that the untold stories and potential of the ensemble's legacy hold even greater beauty. This sentiment underscores the enduring impact of the USJ-R Dramatics and Cultural Ensemble, which continues to inspire through music, theater, and community building.
