A Promise of Love: Lando and Mayang's Story of Hope and Devotion
Lando and Mayang: A Promise of Love and Hope

In a quiet and small village surrounded by lush rice fields and mango trees that are constantly swayed by the wind, the story of Lando and Mayang began. As children, they had no worries except what to play each day. When it rained, they played in the mud, laughing together while getting wet in the rain. When it was hot, they climbed mango trees, picked ripe fruit, and shared even if they only got a little. And when the sun was about to set, they sat by the river, watching the light slowly disappear from the sky. They did not have much, but their treasure was each other—a friendship full of joy and innocent feelings.

Mayang's Struggles and Lando's Dreams

Mayang was the daughter of a poor family. Even as a child, she knew what exhaustion was—helping in the farm, fetching water, and taking care of her siblings. Lando, although not rich either, had a different outlook on life. He had big dreams of leaving the village, learning, and providing a better future, not only for himself but also for Mayang.

As they grew up, their friendship slowly changed. There was a feeling that was deeper, heavier, but they did not yet know how to express it. Sometimes, they would look at each other and just laugh, as if there was something to say but it was not yet time.

The Parting Under the Mango Tree

One day, the time came when Lando had to leave. He received an opportunity to study in another country—a big step toward his dream. Under their favorite mango tree, they faced the reality that they would be separated.

“Wait for me,” Lando said, his voice soft but clear. “I will come back. For you.”

Mayang, crying but strong at heart, nodded. She held Lando’s hand, as if leaving all her hopes there. “I will wait, Lando,” she replied.

Years of Waiting and Sacrifice

The years passed. In the village, Mayang stayed. She continued to help her family, facing exhaustion and lack every day. But no matter how hard it was, she never let go of the promise. Every letter she received from Lando brought back light to her world. Her smile would return, even for a moment.

However, over time, her body weakened. The fatigue and lack began to take a toll on her health. She fell ill, and slowly, she lost her strength. Still, she never stopped hoping. Every day, she continued to wait.

Far away, Lando also did not stop. He worked hard in his studies, worked, and endured to achieve his dream. But every night, his mind would still return to the village where the river, the mangoes, and especially Mayang were.

The Return

When he finished his studies, he did not delay. He immediately returned home, carrying the promise he had kept for so long.

Upon arriving in the village, he felt a strange heaviness in the air, quiet. He went straight to Mayang’s house. There he saw the woman he loved—her body thin, her breath weak, but her eyes still full of hope.

“Mayang…” he called out, filled with pain.

Mayang slowly closed her eyes, then opened them again. When she saw Lando, a peaceful smile appeared on her face.

“You came back…” she said softly.

“I came back. I did not forget,” Lando replied, holding her cold hand.

“I know,” Mayang said. “I have been waiting… until now.”

The Enduring Promise

As they looked at each other, all the unsaid words of the years were filled with silence. And despite her weakness, the love they had kept since childhood remained pure and true.

In the end, as they held hands, Lando understood that a promise is not just about returning, but about loving, even when time can no longer be stopped.
