Davao Student Excels in International Dancesport Arena

Sofia Antonia Manzano, a first-year Medical Biology student at Ateneo de Davao University, has captured international attention with her outstanding performances in dancesport competitions. Her recent achievements at a prestigious event in Singapore have solidified her reputation as a rising star in the global dance community.

Singapore Success and Podium Finishes

At the 7th Brillante International Dancesport Championship, held at Marina Bay Sands on April 11, 2026, Manzano and her partner Iman Basan delivered a series of impressive results. They secured third place in the Pre-Amateur Latin category, which included dances like Rumba, Cha-cha, and Jive. Additionally, they placed sixth in the Latin Youth division and advanced to the semi-finals in the Amateur Rising Star category, competing against top athletes from around the world.

Previous Triumphs in Osaka

Prior to their success in Singapore, the duo showcased their skills at the Osaka Winter Dance Festival on December 1, 2025. There, they dominated the Under-18 category, winning four gold medals in Rumba, Cha-cha, Jive, and Samba. In the Under-23 division, they added more medals to their collection, including golds in Rumba, Jive, and Samba, a silver in Cha-cha, and a bronze in the Amateur Rising Star division.

Training and Background

Manzano began her international dancesport journey two years ago under the guidance of Ferdz Tagunayon at FM Dance Academy Toril. She has also benefited from the coaching of Denis Bunayog, Rhea Marquez, Hanz Basan, and Charlea Lagaras. Her dance foundation is rooted in 16 years of ballet training with Agnes Locsin at the Locsin Dance Workshop, which has seamlessly transitioned into her Latin dance career. Known for her artistry, elegance, and strong work ethic, Manzano balances her demanding academic schedule with rigorous training.

Values and Local Pride

A proud Dabawenya, Manzano attributes her achievements to staying true to herself, maintaining humility, and being persistent and grateful—values instilled by her parents. Her partner, Iman Basan, a national dancesport standout studying at Marhaba School Davao, complements her efforts as part of the Batang Toril Dancesport Team. Together, they have also earned medals in national competitions, such as the Philippine Dancesport Federation National Competition and the Singkaban National Dancesport Competition.

Their accomplishments bring immense pride to Davao City and the Philippines, highlighting the exceptional talent of young Filipinos on the international stage.
