Davao City Welcomes Irish, Swedish Ambassadors

Davao City has actively welcomed foreign delegations in 2026, with Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte receiving several diplomats to explore investment opportunities and strengthen bilateral ties. Harvey Lanticse, head of the Davao City Information Office, confirmed that since the start of the year, the city has hosted about 10 diplomats. In July alone, the city welcomed the ambassadors of Sweden and Ireland.

Ireland Ambassador’s First Official Visit

On July 1, 2026, Irish Ambassador to the Philippines Her Excellency Emma Hickey paid a courtesy call on Mayor Duterte, marking her first official visit to the city. During the meeting, Hickey expressed interest in cooperation in energy, education, and cultural exchange. Duterte encouraged Irish companies to invest in Davao City, highlighting that the local government provides robust institutional support and is working to ensure a smooth and efficient investment process.

Sweden Ambassador Discusses Transport and Investment

Swedish Ambassador to the Philippines Anna Ferry also visited Davao City on June 29, 2026, for a courtesy call with Duterte. Their discussions focused on bilateral relations between Sweden and Davao City, particularly in transportation, investment opportunities, and other areas of mutual interest.

Open for Investors

Lanticse emphasized that Davao City is open to all investors, regardless of their country of origin. The visits aim to strengthen ties between Davao City and other nations. Many members of the ambassadors' delegations are foreign investors seeking discussions with the city's business chambers. Most investors are interested in the agribusiness and agriculture sectors, where Davao City has a strong presence. Renewable energy and education were also among the topics discussed.

Rising Number of Diplomatic Visits

Davao City Councilor Rachel Zozobrado, chairperson of the Committee on International Relations, earlier stated that the number of foreign dignitaries visiting the city is expected to increase in the coming months of 2026. As of the first half of 2026, the city had already welcomed 10 foreign dignitaries, including representatives from Israel, the United States, India, Belgium, the Solomon Islands, Denmark, Australia, Norway, China, and Japan—with Japan sending delegations twice.
