The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Zamboanga Peninsula has taken a significant step in wildlife conservation by securing a young Philippine crocodile. The critically endangered reptile is now undergoing assessment and rehabilitation at the Regional Wildlife Rescue Center located in Baclay, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur.
Rescue and Voluntary Surrender
The rescue operation was facilitated by the DENR's Conservation and Development Division-Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Section (CDD-PAMBCS). The turnover of the crocodile occurred last week in Bulatok village, Pagadian City, which serves as the capital of Zamboanga del Sur province.
The animal, identified as a juvenile Philippine crocodile approximately one year old and almost a meter long, was voluntarily handed over by a local resident named Jefrey Cadonoy. According to the DENR's announcement on Monday, December 29, 2025, the crocodile was incidentally caught and found entangled in a fishnet during Cadonoy's regular harvest at his fishpond.
Journey to Safety and Rehabilitation
Personnel from DENR-Zamboanga Peninsula ensured the careful handling and secure transport of the vulnerable crocodile to its new temporary home. The Regional Wildlife Rescue Center in Baclay, Tukuran will provide the necessary professional care for the animal's assessment, rehabilitation, and proper management.
This intervention is crucial for the survival of the individual animal and the species as a whole. The Philippine freshwater crocodile, known scientifically as Crocodylus mindorensis, is a critically endangered species endemic to the Philippines. It plays a vital role as a predator in inland freshwater ecosystems.
Ecological Importance of the Species
The survival of the Philippine crocodile is key to maintaining ecological balance. As an endemic predator, it contributes to the stability of rivers, lakes, and marshes by:
- Regulating prey populations to prevent overpopulation.
- Maintaining healthy aquatic food webs through its natural role.
- Indicating the overall health of freshwater habitats it inhabits.
The successful rescue and rehabilitation of this juvenile highlight the importance of community cooperation in conservation. The voluntary surrender by Mr. Cadonoy demonstrates growing public awareness and support for protecting the nation's unique biodiversity.
