The Iloilo City Government and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) officially broke ground on May 11, 2026, on a series of transformative active mobility projects designed to enhance walkability and bike-friendliness in the city. The ceremony took place at the Esplanade 3 Skate Park, where one of the End-of-Trip (EOT) facilities will be constructed.
P74-Million National Investment
This event marks the beginning of a P74-million national investment in sustainable infrastructure. Mayor Raisa Treñas emphasized that the funding comes entirely from the DOTr, with no cost to the city government. "Kay na-recognize nila ang Iloilo as one of the cities in active mobility. Tanan (fund) iya sang DOTr. Wala gid ang syudad gasto," she said.
End-of-Trip Facilities
The project includes the construction of EOT facilities at four strategic sites, namely the Esplanade and Freedom Grandstand. These facilities will offer secure bicycle parking, shower rooms, changing areas, and lockers to support commuters who cycle to work or school.
Additional Infrastructure
Other key components of the project involve urban shading structures and improved public transport stops, further encouraging active mobility across the city.
During the ceremony, Mayor Treñas revealed that Iloilo City is only the second city in the country to receive this project, following Marikina City. This initiative underscores the city's commitment to sustainable urban development and a greener future.
