The House of Representatives has impeached Vice President Sara Duterte with an overwhelming majority of votes from congressmen.
A total of 257 congressmen voted in favor of adopting House Resolution 989 along with Committee Report 261, which contains the Articles of Impeachment against the Vice President.
On the other hand, 25 congressmen voted against the impeachment while 9 abstained.
Four Cebu Representatives Oppose Impeachment
Among those who opposed the impeachment were Cebu City 1st District Rep. Rachel del Mar, Cebu Province 3rd District Rep. Karen Hope Garcia, 4th District Rep. Sun Shimura, and Malasakit at Bayanihan Party-list Rep. Girlie Veloso.
House Ready to Transmit Articles to Senate
In a radio interview, Bicol Saro party-list Representative Terry Ridon, who voted in favor of Duterte's impeachment, said the House of Representatives is ready to transmit the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate, which will sit as the impeachment court, at the earliest possible time.
In a statement, Duterte's legal team said they are prepared to defend her.
Charges Against Duterte
The complaints against Duterte, who served as concurrent secretary of the Department of Education from 2022 until she resigned from the Cabinet in July 2024, center on alleged irregularities in the use of confidential funds, abuse of power, and accusations of betrayal of public trust.
Also included are alleged threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
