A destructive fire swept through a residential area in Bacolod City on Wednesday evening, February 11, 2026, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. The blaze, which erupted in Purok Magti-ayon, Barangay 10, resulted in at least 11 houses being consumed by flames and one individual sustaining injuries.

Injury and Initial Blaze

The injured person has been identified as El Pfely Cristobal, a 21-year-old resident who suffered a laceration on her right middle finger during the incident. According to records from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Bacolod, the fire originated at Cristobal's house at precisely 9:43 p.m., marking the start of a harrowing ordeal for the community.

Rapid Spread and Firefighting Challenges

The fire quickly escalated, spreading to neighboring houses constructed from a mix of light and concrete materials. Multiple BFP fire trucks, along with volunteer fire units, were dispatched to combat the inferno. However, responders encountered significant obstacles due to narrow passageways in the area, forcing them to manually pull and connect water hoses to reach the affected zone effectively.

Extent of Damage and Displacement

Of the 11 houses impacted by the fire, six were completely destroyed, while five sustained varying degrees of damage. The disaster has displaced at least 24 families, comprising a total of 43 individuals who have lost their homes and belongings in the blaze.

Property Loss and Investigation

The fire was finally extinguished around 10:05 p.m., but not before causing an estimated P75,000 worth of property damage. In the aftermath, arson investigators have launched a thorough inquiry to determine the exact cause of the fire, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Immediate Relief Efforts

Mayor Greg Gasataya swiftly mobilized assistance for the affected families, providing food packs to those in need. The displaced residents are currently taking temporary shelter at the barangay evacuation center, with support from the Department of Social Services Development (DSSD). Additionally, Mayor Gasataya has directed the DSSD to expedite financial aid for the impacted residents, ensuring they receive crucial support during this difficult time.
