Tropical Storm Basyang Death Toll Climbs to 12 in Mindanao, Rescue Efforts Intensify

Rescue operations were actively conducted in Barangay Bugo, Cagayan de Oro on February 6, 2026, as Tropical Storm Basyang unleashed its fury across the region. The storm's impact has led to a tragic rise in casualties and widespread displacement, prompting urgent response efforts from local and national authorities.

Casualty Reports and Validation Underway

According to the latest update from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), the death toll has increased to 12 individuals due to Tropical Storm Basyang. In a report issued at 6:00 PM on Saturday, February 7, 2026, the OCD detailed that nine lives were lost in Northern Mindanao, specifically in areas including Cagayan de Oro, Lanao del Norte, and Iligan City. Additionally, three fatalities were recorded in the Caraga region, particularly in Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Norte.

The OCD emphasized that these casualty reports are still undergoing validation to ensure accuracy and provide a clear picture of the storm's human cost. This process is crucial for coordinating relief efforts and allocating resources effectively to the most affected communities.

Widespread Impact and Evacuation Efforts

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) released a separate report highlighting the extensive scale of the disaster. Nearly 500,000 people, or over 131,000 families, have been affected by the severe weather conditions brought by Basyang. Among this staggering number, 16,297 individuals, equivalent to 5,818 families, were forced to seek refuge in evacuation centers during the peak of the storm.

These evacuation centers have become temporary shelters for displaced residents, providing essential services and safety as recovery operations continue. The high number of evacuees underscores the urgent need for sustained support and humanitarian aid in the aftermath of the tropical storm.

Damage Assessment and Relief Distribution

Initial assessments reveal significant property damage, with approximately 445 homes reported as destroyed due to the effects of Tropical Storm Basyang. The structural impact has compounded the challenges faced by affected families, many of whom have lost their livelihoods and personal belongings.

In response, relief efforts have been mobilized, with more than PHP 8.3 million worth of assistance already distributed to victims. This aid includes food packs, medical supplies, and other necessities to help alleviate the immediate hardships faced by communities in Northern Mindanao and Caraga.

As rescue and recovery operations persist, authorities remain vigilant in monitoring the situation and providing updates. The combined efforts of the OCD, NDRRMC, and local government units are focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected residents while addressing the long-term rehabilitation needs in the wake of Tropical Storm Basyang.
