Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Hits Bogo City, Cebu, Injuring Six and Causing Damage
Magnitude 5.1 Quake Injures Six in Bogo City, Cebu

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake rattled the eastern part of Bogo City, Cebu, on Monday afternoon, April 6, 2026, resulting in injuries and significant structural damage. The tremor, which occurred at 3:22 p.m., has prompted emergency responses and safety assessments across the affected areas.

Injuries and Initial Damage Reports

According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), preliminary evaluations indicate that six individuals sustained injuries due to shattered glass and falling debris. The powerful quake also triggered a power outage in Barangay Cogon and Barangay Banban within the city, exacerbating the situation for residents and emergency crews.

Structural Impacts on Key Buildings

Beyond Bogo City, the San Remigio Parish building, which had already suffered damage from a previous earthquake in 2025, experienced further deterioration. Additionally, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) building incurred notable damage, raising concerns about the stability of public infrastructure in the region.

Ainjeliz Orong, the Cebu Provincial Information Officer, emphasized that comprehensive assessments are currently underway to evaluate the condition of buildings and other structures that may have sustained harm. "We are closely monitoring all potentially affected edifices to prevent any escalation of risks," Orong stated.

Hospital Safety Measures and Emergency Response

One of the primary focuses is the Bogo City Provincial Hospital, where authorities are taking proactive steps to ensure patient safety. Due to initial cracks detected in the building from the 2025 quake, patients are being temporarily relocated to tents set up outside the facility as a precautionary measure.

Orong explained the immediate actions being taken: "The hospital has requested support for a structural assessment, so we are dispatching a team to evaluate the situation promptly. In the meantime, tents from Medellin, originally reserved for Holy Week activities, are being utilized to accommodate patients and staff."

Regional Coordination and Ongoing Assessments

The earthquake's effects extended to neighboring localities, including Sogod City, where similar assessments are being conducted. Orong highlighted the coordinated efforts between local government units and provincial authorities to address emerging needs.

"We maintain close coordination with LGUs, and the governor is in direct communication with mayors to provide necessary support from the Capitol," she added, underscoring the collaborative approach to disaster management.

As recovery operations continue, residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow official updates from disaster response teams. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the region's vulnerability to seismic activity and the importance of robust preparedness measures.
