San Remigio Flood Emergency Intensifies After Typhoon

The flooding situation in Barangay Gaway-Gaway in the municipality of San Remigio has dramatically worsened following heavy rains brought by Typhoon Tino. The storm saturated a landslide that had formed a natural dam, originally created by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck northern Cebu in September 2025.

Emergency Response and Coordination Efforts

Mayor Mariano Martinez announced on Friday, November 7, 2025 that local officials are actively working to address the rapidly rising water level in the area situated between Barangay Gaway-Gaway and Barangay Anonang Sur. The natural blockage, initially caused by the September earthquake and severely exacerbated by the recent storm, continues to pool water and cause significant flooding throughout the community.

Martinez confirmed that officials plan to coordinate with private contractors to help lower the dangerous water levels. However, clearing operations that had previously begun have been suspended due to unstable soil conditions that pose serious safety risks to workers and equipment.

Resource Challenges and Regional Priorities

The emergency equipment has been temporarily withdrawn to assist disaster response operations in other typhoon-affected areas, including Metro Cebu and various locations throughout northern Cebu. This resource redistribution reflects the widespread impact of Typhoon Tino across the region.

Mayor Martinez added that he has personally contacted the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for additional support. However, the agency is currently prioritizing clearing operations directly related to typhoon damage across multiple affected municipalities, creating challenges for immediate assistance in San Remigio.

The combined effect of the September earthquake and subsequent typhoon has created a complex environmental emergency that requires coordinated efforts between local government units, national agencies, and private sector partners to ensure community safety and restore normal conditions.
