Lapu-Lapu City is ramping up solid waste management initiatives in public schools ahead of the nationwide Brigada Eskwela 2026, with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility during the third regular meeting of the Local School Board.
Brigada Eskwela 2026 Schedule
Brigada Eskwela 2026 will be held from June 1 to 5, 2026.
In a statement released on Saturday, May 17, the City Information Office said that the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro), in coordination with the Department of Education–Lapu-Lapu City Division, conducted a “comprehensive inventory” of solid waste management facilities in all public schools to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
Project Cindi and Waste Segregation
The city government has also strengthened environmental initiatives through “Project Cindi,” which promotes urban gardening in schools, alongside campaigns on proper waste segregation and strict enforcement of the ordinance against single-use plastics.
The city enforces an ordinance that regulates and limits single-use plastics as part of its environmental protection efforts, encouraging the use of eco-friendly alternatives such as paper and reusable bags.
Plastic Restrictions and Penalties
The city government’s ordinance includes restrictions on plastic bags and a ban on plastic straws to reduce waste and protect marine ecosystems. Violators will face penalties. Fines for non-compliance range from P500 to P1,000 for the first offense, P2,000 to P3,000 for the second offense, and P4,000 to P5,000 for the third offense. Repeat violators may also face suspension or cancellation of their business permits as part of the city’s stricter enforcement of environmental policies.
Meeting with Barangay Captains
Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan also met with barangay captains to strengthen collaboration and discuss compliance of primary and secondary schools with the city government’s Solid Waste Management Program.
