The Philippine Army has deployed the 11th Field Artillery Battalion (11FAB) and the 17th Special Forces Company (17SFC) to Sulu, marking a significant step in the implementation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) rationalization plan. This plan involves the reassignment of field artillery units between different areas of responsibility (AOR).

Joint Welcome and Send-Off Ceremony

The Sulu-based 11th Infantry Division (11ID) hosted a joint welcome and send-off ceremony on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Mauboh Beach in Patikul. During the event, the 11ID welcomed the 11FAB and 17SFC while bidding farewell to the 1st Field Artillery Battalion (1FAB), which is being reassigned to a new AOR.

Rationalization Plan Details

Major General Leonardo Peña, commander of the 11ID and Joint Task Force (JTF)-Orion, explained that under the rationalization plan, the 1FAB will be deployed to the AOR of the 1st Infantry Division (1ID), while the 11FAB will operate under the 11ID. The 11ID has operational jurisdiction over the provinces of Sulu and Basilan, whereas the 1ID covers the Zamboanga Peninsula, Lanao provinces, and Misamis Occidental.

Role of the 17th Special Forces Company

Peña stated that the 17SFC is tasked with conducting resiliency operations and enhancing the operational capability and capability-building efforts of infantry units operating in Sulu. This deployment aims to strengthen the overall effectiveness of military operations in the region.

Awards and Recognition

During the ceremony, Peña awarded the Military Merit Medal to personnel of the Alpha Battery of the 1FAB in recognition of their exemplary service and contributions to mission accomplishment in Sulu province. He noted that the 1FAB personnel had earned the respect and trust of the local population through their dedication and service.

Peña reminded the troops that continued vigilance, professionalism, and commitment remain essential in addressing future challenges, even though significant peace and security milestones have been achieved in Sulu. The deployment of the three units is part of the Philippine Army's efforts to improve organizational effectiveness, operational readiness, and mission accomplishment in support of national security and lasting peace in the province.
