ZAMBOANGA. Personnel of the Coast Guard Station Eastern Sulu rescued three fishermen from a burning motorboat off Tulayan village, Luuk, Sulu on June 27, 2026. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed the incident on Monday, June 29.

Rescue Operation Details

The motorboat named "Tontonhanz" caught fire while the fishermen were fishing off Tulayan village on Saturday, June 27. The Coast Guard Station Eastern Sulu (CGS-ES) did not disclose the identities of the rescued fishermen, stating only that they are residents of Kan-Mindus village, Luuk.

The damaged motorboat was towed to the shore of Tandu-Bato village, Luuk.

Cause of Fire

According to the CGS-ES, the fire was triggered by an explosion that occurred during refueling while the vessel's engine was still running. The incident underscores the dangers of improper refueling procedures.
