Holy Rosary Parish Church in Angeles City Elevated to Minor Basilica by Pope Leo XIV

The Holy Rosary Parish Church in Angeles City, Pampanga, has been officially elevated to the status of a minor basilica by Pope Leo XIV, marking a significant milestone in its religious and historical journey. This prestigious recognition was granted through a decree dated January 21, 2026, issued by the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, following a formal petition submitted by the archdiocese.

Archdiocese Petition and Papal Decree

Last year, San Fernando Archbishop Florentino Lavarias formally petitioned for the elevation, highlighting the parish's robust liturgical life and its enduring devotion to the Blessed Mother. The decree was received on February 10, 2026, at the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila by the parish priest, Fr. Manuel Sta. Maria, along with other clergy members, solidifying the church's new status.

Reflection of Devotion and Community Faith

According to Fr. Sta. Maria, this honor is a profound reflection of the deep devotion to the Blessed Mother, shared not only by the parishioners but also by the broader Kapampangan community. He emphasized that the elevation serves as a testament to the faith and dedication of both Angeleños and Kapampangans, underscoring the church's role as a spiritual center.

Historical Milestones and Significance

The elevation coincides with several key historical milestones for the church and Angeles City this year, including:

  • The 380th anniversary of the Battle of La Naval.
  • The 230th anniversary of the founding of Barrio Culiat, which later became Balen Culiat and is now known as Angeles City.
  • The 140th anniversary of the first Mass celebrated in Pisamban Maragul.

A minor basilica is a church granted special status by the pope, recognizing its historical importance, strong liturgical practices, and significance as a worship center. Such churches are afforded particular privileges, such as the right to display papal symbols like the crossed keys and the conopaeum, and are expected to uphold exemplary liturgical standards.

First in Pampanga and 30th in the Philippines

The Holy Rosary Parish Church now holds the distinction of being the first church in Pampanga to receive this title and only the 30th in the entire Philippines. The Solemn Declaration of the Minor Basilica is set to be announced soon, further cementing its place in the country's religious landscape.
