Bacolod Philippines Temple Set for Grand Opening in May 2026
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has officially announced that its new Bacolod Philippines Temple will open on May 31, 2026. Located at Lot 1 Bacolod-Silay Access Road in Barangay Bata, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, this sacred structure marks a significant milestone for the religious community in the region.
A Historic Addition to Philippine Religious Landscape
Elder K. Brett Nattress, a General Authority Seventy of the Church, emphasized the temple's importance during a media tour on April 13, 2026. "This sacred house of worship will be the sixth Latter-day Saint temple in the country and the first in Negros Island," he stated. The temple's construction began on December 11, 2021, on a 12.3-acre land area, featuring a structural steel-braced frame that reaches 36.1 meters from the main level to the spire's top.
Open House Invites Public Exploration
Prior to the official opening, the temple will host an open house from Thursday, April 16, 2026, to Saturday, May 2, 2026, excluding Sundays. "We love sharing a temple, a house of the Lord, a place that we find so sacred for us and sharing now with our friends and neighbors," Nattress explained. "We have this open house to take people to help to have a great understanding of what we believe." The tours are free and require no reservations, offering people of all faiths the opportunity to explore the temple's interior and grounds.
Cultural and Architectural Significance
The temple's design incorporates traditional Filipino cultural elements, with exterior patterns inspired by barong shirt motifs that reflect heritage textile designs. The color palette draws from local flora, such as the bird of paradise and native lilies, creating a vibrant atmosphere that honors the region's natural beauty. The perimeter is enclosed with painted decorative steel fencing, adding to its aesthetic appeal.
Serving a Growing Congregation
Nattress highlighted that there are over 900,000 Latter-day Saints in the Philippines, worshipping in more than 1,300 congregations. Once dedicated, the Bacolod Philippines Temple will serve members living in Negros and Panay Islands. He also noted that additional temples are under construction or announced in various cities, including Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Laoag, Naga, San Jose del Monte, Santiago, Tacloban City, and Tuguegarao City.
Distinct Purpose of Temple Worship
Nattress clarified the difference between temples and meetinghouses, where Sunday worship services are held. "Each temple is considered a house of the Lord, where Jesus Christ's teachings are reaffirmed through sacred ordinances that unite families eternally," he said. "In the temple, Church members learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to follow Jesus Christ and serve others." The temple's central focus remains on the savior Jesus Christ, encouraging kindness and service among followers.
