Bacolor Celebrates 159th Birth Anniversary of Juan Crisostomo Soto
Officials from Bacolor and esteemed Kapampangan poet laureates spearheaded honor rites commemorating the 159th birth anniversary of Juan Crisostomo Soto, widely recognized as the Father of Capampangan Literature. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, January 27, at his monument situated in front of the town's public market, drawing a diverse crowd of cultural enthusiasts and community members.
Poetic Tributes and Floral Offerings
During the event, poet laureates presented heartfelt poems dedicated to Soto, highlighting his enduring influence on Kapampangan arts. This was accompanied by the traditional laying of flowers at the monument, a gesture symbolizing respect and remembrance for his contributions. Attendees included Soto's descendants, academic representatives, members of the Pampanga State University Center for Capampangan Culture and the Arts, the SAPNI nang Crissot Literary and Cultural Foundation Inc., and various other arts and culture organizations.
Mayor's Call to Preserve Legacy
In a poignant message, Mayor Duman Datu urged the community to perpetuate Soto's memory, describing him as a beacon of inspiration for writers and cultural workers. Datu emphasized the critical role Soto played in preserving the Kapampangan language and literary traditions, stressing that his extensive body of work must remain accessible and relevant, especially to younger generations of Kapampangans.
Life and Achievements of Juan Crisostomo Soto
Born on January 27, 1867, in Barrio Sta. Ines, Bacolor, Soto's literary journey began with his first work, Ing Pamaquiasaua ning Mete, inspired by William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Over his career, he authored approximately 50 zarzuelas, along with numerous poems, novels, short stories, comedies, and essays, enriching the cultural tapestry of the region. Soto was also a co-founder of the newspapers Ing Alipatpat and Ing Emangabiran, and he actively participated in the 1898 Revolution under the command of Generals Maximino Hizon of Mexico, Pampanga, Eugenio Blanco of Macabebe, and later General Tomas Mascardo.
