BARMM Grants P5M Medical Aid to Davao Oriental Amid Earthquake Aftermath
BARMM P5M Medical Aid for Davao Oriental Quakes

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has demonstrated a powerful act of interregional solidarity by extending P5 million in medical assistance to the Province of Davao Oriental. This crucial aid is set to provide significant relief for residents struggling with healthcare costs as the province grapples with the lingering effects of recent seismic activity.

Formal Turnover and Program Details

The financial assistance was formally handed over during a ceremony held at the Tourism Mansion inside the Provincial Capitol on November 6, 2025. This substantial sum, released through the Ayudang Medikal mula sa Bangsamoro Government (AMBaG) Program, is earmarked specifically to support indigent patients receiving care at the Davao Oriental Provincial Medical Center (DOPMC).

This marks the third time that BARMM has channeled funds to Davao Oriental under its flagship AMBaG initiative. The program, which began its groundwork in late 2019 and officially launched in 2020, is implemented in collaboration with hospitals across the nation. Local coordination is managed through the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Eastern Davao Provincial Committee.

Addressing Healthcare Needs After Earthquakes

The arrival of this medical aid is particularly timely, as Davao Oriental continues to recover from a series of tectonic earthquakes. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported multiple offshore aftershocks originating from the powerful doublet tremors of 7.2 and 6.9 magnitudes recorded off the coasts of Manay, Governor Generoso, Mati, and Baganga from late October to early November 2025.

While no major structural damage was reported, provincial authorities have noted a concerning trend. Earthquakes often trigger a rise in hospital visitations, especially among the elderly and individuals dealing with trauma-related anxiety or pre-existing health conditions. The AMBaG funds will directly address this need by helping to cover hospital bills, laboratory procedures, and other essential medical expenses for those who cannot afford treatment.

A Model of Solidarity and Preparedness

Provincial officials have praised the partnership, calling it a model of interregional cooperation. The Davao Oriental Provincial Government stated that "This partnership reflects the enduring spirit of unity and shared compassion across regions, proving that genuine service knows no boundaries."

BARMM health officials emphasized that the AMBaG program is driven purely by humanitarian commitment, not political motives. They affirmed the Bangsamoro Government's willingness to assist communities beyond its immediate geographic jurisdiction as long as resources are available.

Phivolcs reiterated that Davao Oriental remains one of the country's most seismically active areas due to its proximity to the Philippine Fault System and active offshore trenches. The agency continues to advise residents to maintain preparedness and vigilance.

With the assistance now formally received, the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental has begun coordination with BARMM and DOPMC for the fund's utilization. The hospital management confirmed that the funds will be accessible to qualified patients once validation and documentation procedures are completed, ensuring a transparent and fair distribution process. The public will receive updates as beneficiaries start availing of the support.
