Davao City Hosts Grand Celebration for Japanese Emperor's 66th Birthday

Despite the geographical distance separating the Philippines and Japan, Davao City warmly commemorated the 66th birthday of His Majesty, Emperor Naruhito. This festive occasion also marked the significant milestone of the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The event, held on February 19, 2026, at the SMX Convention Center, transformed the venue into a vibrant "Japan experience," showcasing the deep cultural and political bonds.

A Night of Unity and Celebration

The celebration was graced by key figures, including Consul General of Japan to Davao, Ono Hirotaka, and Councilor Rachel Zozobrado, chairperson of the 21st Davao City Council’s Committee on International Relations. They jointly led a toast in honor of Emperor Naruhito, symbolizing the enduring friendship. The venue buzzed with activity, featuring booths from renowned Japanese brands, an exquisite array of Japanese cuisine, and fine wines, including traditional sake. Esteemed guests included members of the Davao City Council, Mindanao industry leaders, local government officials, and other dignitaries, all gathered to celebrate this historic moment.

Symbolism of a Seven-Decade Partnership

During his speech, Consul General Ono Hirotaka unveiled and explained a special logo created for the 70th anniversary. The design masterfully intertwines Japan's "Shimenawa" rope with the Philippines' abaca (hemp) rope, representing unity and collaboration. "The logo captures our anniversary theme: Weaving the Future Together: Peace, Prosperity, Possibilities. True to this concept, our friendship was woven from threads of hope and mutual respect," ConGen Ono stated. This imagery underscores the theme of weaving a shared future, emphasizing peace, prosperity, and endless possibilities fostered over seven decades.

Messages of Commitment and Shared Heritage

Councilor Rachel Zozobrado delivered a message from Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte, who highlighted the event as a testament to the prosperous and fruitful partnership between Japan and the Philippines. "Beyond historical ties, our shared heritage continues to shape the identity of our city into what it is today. Daghang salamat for your continued commitment to further sustainable growth and progress in our communities," the mayor expressed. This acknowledgment reflects the ongoing collaboration that drives sustainable development and progress in Davao City and beyond.
