First Latter-day Saints Temple in Mindanao Opens Doors for Public Tours
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has inaugurated an open house for its first-ever temple in Mindanao, providing a unique opportunity for public visitation from March 26 to April 10, 2026. This landmark event, excluding Sundays, allows visitors to explore the temple grounds and gain insights into the spiritual purpose of this house of the Lord.
Enhanced Accessibility for Local Members
Erich W. Kopischke, a General Authority Seventy, extended a warm invitation to the public, encouraging them to "learn, see, and feel the presence of the Lord" during their visit. For many members residing in Mindanao, this temple represents a significant convenience. Previously, they had to undertake lengthy journeys to Cebu City or Metro Manila to access a temple, with some even traveling as far as Hawaii in the past.
Elder William K. Jackson, General Authority Seventy and Second Counselor in the Philippine Area Presidency, highlighted the transformative impact of this development. He noted that with 14 temples now across the country, members enjoy much easier access. "This will bring the blessings of the temples closer to our membership," Jackson emphasized, adding that plans are underway to construct more temples in Mindanao to accommodate the growing congregation. Once completed, the temple in Cagayan de Oro will become the second such facility on the island.
Architectural and Historical Details
The temple is situated at the intersection of Maa Road and Anahaw Road in Barangay Maa, Davao City. Spanning 1.09 hectares, the building features a floor area of 1,714 square meters and rises to a height of 37.3 meters. Its design is inspired by traditional Filipino culture, incorporating elements reminiscent of embroidered piña fabric, with floral patterns and geometric motifs adorning the glass windows.
The construction timeline for this sacred structure began with its announcement on October 7, 2018, followed by a groundbreaking ceremony on November 14, 2020. The temple is scheduled for dedication on May 3, 2026. In the Philippines, additional temples are currently under construction in Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, and Tacloban, reflecting the Church's expanding presence.
With approximately 900,000 members worshipping in around 1,400 congregations nationwide, this temple serves as a pivotal hub for spiritual activities, where members gather to honor Jesus Christ as their Savior. The open house not only fosters community engagement but also underscores the Church's commitment to enhancing religious experiences in the region.
