The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has announced an ambitious plan to significantly expand its international network next year. The goal is to establish seven new Migrant Workers Offices (MWOs) in 2026, bringing essential services and protection closer to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in key destinations.
Expanding Global Reach for Filipino Workers
During a recent press briefing, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac revealed the department's proactive expansion strategy. He emphasized that the move is part of ongoing initiatives to enhance overseas coverage in countries identified as priority labor markets. "Expansion initiatives are underway to further enhance overseas coverage in priority labor destination countries," Secretary Cacdac stated.
The primary objective is to provide more accessible, on-the-ground assistance to Filipino nationals working abroad. By increasing its physical presence, the DMW aims to offer more robust support systems for OFWs, including legal aid, welfare services, and employment facilitation. "Our target for next year is, hopefully, to open more MWOs and increase our presence," Cacdac added, highlighting the department's commitment to its mandate.
Seven New Target Locations Unveiled
The seven countries slated for new Migrant Workers Offices represent a diverse mix of regions and labor markets. The planned expansion will see the DMW establish a foothold in:
- Turkey
- Guam
- Vietnam
- Norway
- Finland
- South Africa
- Nigeria
This selection indicates a strategic approach to cover both established and emerging destinations for Filipino labor, ensuring that support structures evolve with global migration trends.
Building on an Existing Global Network
This planned expansion for 2026 will build upon the DMW's already substantial global footprint. According to the latest data from the department, it currently operates 42 Migrant Workers Offices spread across 31 countries worldwide. The addition of seven new offices represents a significant step in the continuous effort to blanket major OFW hubs with direct government support and protection services.
The announcement, made on December 26, 2025, sets a clear agenda for the coming year. It underscores the Philippine government's focus on safeguarding its citizens abroad by bringing critical services closer to where they live and work, thereby strengthening the safety net for the nation's modern-day heroes.
