Davao Airport Opens First OFW Lounge in Mindanao, Serving 300,000 Workers
First OFW Lounge in Mindanao Opens at Davao Airport

The national government has taken a significant step in bringing frontline services closer to Filipinos outside the capital with the inauguration of the first Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Airport Lounge in Mindanao. The facility was launched at the Davao International Airport on Monday, December 23, 2025.

A People-Centered Development Milestone

During the launch, Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Secretary Leo Tereso Magno emphasized that the initiative reflects a shift in national priorities. He stated that development must focus on people, not just infrastructure or traditional sectors. The lounge is expected to directly benefit over 300,000 OFWs from Mindanao, whose remittances are vital to their families and local economies.

Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, who joined Magno at the event, explained that the project fulfills a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to extend government services beyond Metro Manila. He described the lounge as a tribute to migrant workers, ensuring they are treated as "very important persons" from the moment they depart.

Comfort and Support for OFWs

The new lounge is designed to alleviate the emotional stress often experienced by migrant workers during travel. It provides a dedicated, comfortable space featuring amenities comparable to a business-class lounge, including:

  • Comfortable seating areas
  • Complimentary food and coffee
  • Real-time flight information
  • Access to government assistance desks

Its opening during the Christmas season is particularly symbolic, a time when many OFWs are either returning home or leaving their families after the holidays.

Part of a Broader Regional Modernization Push

The lounge launch is not an isolated project. It aligns with two major government agendas: decentralizing critical services and modernizing key regional gateways. The Davao International Airport itself is poised for a major transformation under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) program.

This PPP project will involve the rehabilitation, expansion, operation, and maintenance of the airport to enhance its capacity and facilities, with the government retaining ownership. The new OFW lounge is a precursor to these larger upgrades, directly addressing passenger needs.

Looking ahead, Secretary Cacdac revealed that the DMW is already studying the establishment of similar OFW lounges in Cebu and other cities with international airports, signaling a nationwide roll-out of the program.
