Over 1,000 OFWs in Middle East Seek Repatriation Amid Rising Tensions
1,000+ OFWs Seek Repatriation from Middle East Tensions

More than 1,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have expressed their intention to return to the Philippines as tensions escalate in the Middle East, according to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

Escalating Regional Conflicts Prompt Repatriation Requests

OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan reported that a total of 1,189 OFWs from various parts of the Middle East have sought assistance for repatriation. This development follows recent joint military operations by the United States and Israel targeting Iran last Saturday, which have heightened security concerns across the region.

Breakdown of Affected OFWs by Country

The OWWA has provided a detailed breakdown of the affected workers:

  • 278 OFWs from Bahrain
  • 246 OFWs from Abu Dhabi
  • 231 OFWs from Dubai
  • 173 OFWs from Qatar
  • 62 OFWs from Kuwait
  • 46 OFWs from Israel
  • 5 OFWs from Lebanon

These numbers reflect the widespread impact of the regional instability on Filipino migrant workers.

Continuous Monitoring and Safety Measures

The OWWA is actively monitoring the situation of Filipino workers in these countries to ensure their safety and well-being. Administrator Caunan emphasized that the agency is coordinating with relevant authorities to facilitate the repatriation process for those who wish to return home.

The rising tensions in the Middle East have created an urgent need for protective measures for OFWs, who contribute significantly to the Philippine economy through remittances. The Philippine government is working to address their concerns while maintaining diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.
