The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced on Thursday, April 23, 2026, that 15 Filipino seafarers were aboard two container vessels detained by Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement, DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac assured the public that the 10 crew members of the Epaminondas and the five crew members of the MSC Francesca, both held while attempting to exit the strait on April 22, are safe and unharmed.
DMW Assurance and Family Notification
Cacdac confirmed that the families of the affected seafarers have been informed of the situation. “We have been assured that all 15 seafarers are safe and unharmed,” he said. “We remain in close coordination with their families, the manning agency, and shipowners, and continue to provide updates and support.”
Government Response and Coordination
The DMW stated it is taking all necessary steps to ensure the protection and welfare of the seafarers, while maintaining close coordination with relevant stakeholders. This incident follows a series of vessel interceptions in the region since late February, amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. The department continues to monitor the situation and provide assistance as needed.
