More than 5,600 Filipino seafarers remain stranded at sea in the Middle East aboard over 500 vessels as the ongoing regional crisis in the Gulf area continues to disrupt maritime operations. According to the latest data released by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), a total of 5,663 Filipino crew members are currently stuck on 533 ships located in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
Detailed Breakdown of Stranded Seafarers
The department provided a specific breakdown of the affected individuals and vessels. In the Persian Gulf alone, there are 4,844 seafarers spread across 462 ships. Meanwhile, in the Gulf of Oman, an additional 819 Filipino crew members are stranded on 71 vessels. This situation highlights the significant impact of the regional instability on international shipping and the Filipino maritime workforce.
Government Monitoring and Communication Efforts
During a recent press briefing, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac assured the public that the government is continuously monitoring all ships carrying Filipino personnel. The DMW emphasized that there is constant communication with licensed manning agencies and seafarers' unions to obtain real-time updates about the condition and safety of Filipino crew members. This proactive approach aims to ensure the well-being of those affected while navigating the complex geopolitical landscape.
Diplomatic Assurances from Iran
In a related development, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) disclosed that Iran has provided assurances regarding the safe passage of vessels. Specifically, Iran has guaranteed that ships flying the Philippine flag, those carrying energy resources, and all vessels with Filipino seafarers on board will be permitted to transit safely through the Strait of Hormuz. This commitment comes after the Philippines formally requested "non-hostile country" status from Iran amidst the escalating Middle East crisis.
The ongoing situation underscores the vulnerabilities faced by overseas Filipino workers in conflict zones and the critical role of diplomatic interventions in safeguarding their interests. Authorities continue to work tirelessly to resolve the standoff and ensure the safe return of all stranded seafarers.
