DMW Guarantees Support for OFWs Impacted by Middle East Unrest

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has committed to providing comprehensive assistance to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are unable to return to their employment in the Middle East due to the persistent conflict in the region. This announcement comes as the agency addresses the growing concerns of affected workers and their families.

Identifying Affected Workers and Sectors

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac emphasized that the department is actively compiling a list of OFWs impacted by the situation, as no official roster currently exists. He highlighted that key sectors such as hospitality, transportation, restaurant services, and construction in the Middle East continue to be severely affected by the ongoing tensions, leading to job losses and travel restrictions for Filipino laborers.

In light of these challenges, the DMW has issued a strong advisory urging OFWs to refrain from traveling to the region unless they have secured confirmed employment. This precautionary measure aims to prevent further hardships and ensure the safety and stability of Filipino migrants abroad.

Launch of the Bayanihan Para sa Balikbayang Manggagawa Program

To address the immediate needs of stranded OFWs, the DMW has introduced the Bayanihan Para sa Balikbayang Manggagawa program. This initiative offers financial support and livelihood opportunities to those temporarily unable to resume their work in the Middle East. Secretary Cacdac stated, "Since Day 1, we have been assisting those who cannot depart... We are providing aid to OFWs. With our financial fund, we will help them if they cannot leave immediately."

The program underscores the government's commitment to safeguarding the welfare of migrant workers during crises, ensuring they receive necessary resources while awaiting resolution of the regional conflict.
