The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has officially reported that all Filipinos in Iran are safe and unharmed, despite the ongoing military attacks by the United States and Israel. This announcement comes as tensions escalate in the region, providing reassurance to families and stakeholders back home.
Safety Confirmed Amid Regional Strikes
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac detailed that the agency has verified the well-being of Filipino nationals in Iran, with no injuries or casualties recorded. He attributed this positive outcome to proactive measures, including an existing deployment ban that has limited the number of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the country.
Current Filipino Population in Iran
According to DMW data, approximately 80 Filipinos in Iran are OFWs, while others include those married to Iranian nationals or have established families there. Many of these individuals reside outside the capital city of Tehran, working in sectors such as agriculture and other industries. Overall, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) estimates the total Filipino population in Iran at 823 people.
Deployment Ban and Repatriation Efforts
Secretary Cacdac noted that the number of OFWs in Iran has decreased significantly over the past year due to initial repatriation efforts and the enforcement of a deployment ban. This policy has helped minimize risks for Filipino workers amid the volatile situation.
Alert Level 2 Remains in Effect
In response to the joint attacks, the DFA has maintained Iran at Alert Level 2, also known as the restriction phase. Under this alert, Filipinos are advised to take precautionary measures, including relocating to safe shelters, limiting non-essential movements, avoiding public places, and preparing for potential evacuation or repatriation.
The DMW and DFA continue to monitor the situation closely, coordinating to ensure the safety and welfare of all Filipinos affected by the conflict. Updates will be provided as developments unfold.
