DMW Urges OFWs to Verify Cargo Forwarders to Prevent Balikbayan Box Mishandling
DMW Urges OFWs to Check Cargo Forwarders for Balikbayan Box Safety

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has issued a crucial advisory to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families, urging them to proactively monitor the records of cargo forwarders to safeguard their balikbayan boxes from mishandling and abandonment. This call to action comes amid growing concerns over rogue operators in the shipping industry.

Proactive Measures for OFW Protection

In a recent social media announcement, the DMW emphasized that OFWs should regularly verify the status and reliability of their chosen freight forwarders with the Bureau of Customs (BOC). This step is essential to ensure the trustworthiness of consolidators handling these sentimental shipments.

The department explicitly warned against engaging with dishonest cargo forwarders linked to incidents of mishandling and abandonment. This advisory aims to protect the welfare of OFWs and prevent illegal operations involving balikbayan boxes sent to families in the Philippines.

Case Study: Makati Express Cargo

The DMW highlighted a specific example, citing Makati Express Cargo along with its international partners and affiliates. This reference underscores the real-world risks faced by OFWs when selecting shipping services.

Balikbayan boxes, which typically contain non-perishable food, toiletries, household items, electronics, toys, designer clothing, and other hard-to-find goods, represent more than just parcels—they are tangible expressions of love and support from OFWs to their relatives back home.

Alarming Statistics on Mishandled Boxes

Since 2023, approximately 12,400 balikbayan boxes have been reported as mishandled, requiring retrieval and delivery interventions by the DMW and BOC. This staggering figure highlights the urgency of the department's latest advisory.

The DMW's recommendation serves as a preventive measure to combat the rising cases of cargo forwarder malpractice. By encouraging regular checks with the BOC, OFWs can make informed decisions and avoid potential losses and emotional distress.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance the security and reliability of balikbayan box shipments, ensuring that the hard-earned gifts from OFWs reach their intended recipients safely and promptly.
