DTI Offers P2-B Loan for Returning OFWs to Start Businesses

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has officially launched a substantial P2-billion loan facility specifically designed to support returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) as they reintegrate into the Philippine economy by starting or restarting businesses. This initiative aims to provide crucial financial assistance to those who have come back to the country after working abroad.

Initial Disbursements and Government Encouragement

In a significant move, the DTI has already distributed an initial P2.9 million in loans to 11 OFWs, marking the beginning of this ambitious program. DTI Secretary Cristina Roque has strongly encouraged eligible OFWs to take full advantage of this government-provided support, emphasizing its role in fostering economic stability and self-sufficiency for returnees.

Details of the OFW Negosyo Fund

Under the OFW Negosyo Fund, returning OFWs with at least one year of business management experience are eligible to apply for loans ranging from P30,000 to P20 million, depending on their specific financial needs and business plans. This flexible structure allows for tailored support, whether for small-scale ventures or larger entrepreneurial endeavors.

The program is part of broader efforts to leverage the skills and experiences gained by OFWs overseas, transforming them into drivers of local economic growth. By facilitating access to capital, the DTI hopes to reduce the challenges faced by returnees and promote sustainable livelihoods across the nation.
