Over 5,600 Filipino Seafarers Stranded in Persian Gulf Amid Regional Crisis

More than 5,600 Filipino seafarers continue to be stranded in the waters of the Middle East, aboard over 500 vessels, as the ongoing crisis in the Gulf region persists. According to data released by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), a total of 5,663 Filipino crew members are currently stuck on 533 ships located in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.

Breakdown of Stranded Seafarers by Area

The DMW provided a detailed breakdown of the affected seafarers. In the Persian Gulf, there are 4,844 Filipino seafarers stranded on 462 vessels. Meanwhile, in the Gulf of Oman, 819 Filipino seafarers are aboard 71 ships. This situation highlights the severe impact of the regional instability on maritime workers from the Philippines.

Government Response and Monitoring Efforts

During a recent press briefing, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac assured the public that the department is conducting continuous monitoring of the vessels carrying Filipino crew members. "There is constant communication with licensed manning agencies and seafarers' unions for updates about the situation of Filipino crew members," stated the DMW. This proactive approach aims to ensure the safety and well-being of the stranded seafarers amid the turbulent conditions.

Diplomatic Efforts and Assurances from Iran

In a related development, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) earlier announced that Iran has provided assurances regarding the safe passage of Philippine-flagged vessels, energy sources, and all ships carrying Filipino seafarers through the Strait of Hormuz. This assurance came after the Philippines formally requested a "non-hostile country" status from Iran, seeking to mitigate risks for its nationals in the midst of the Middle East crisis. These diplomatic efforts underscore the government's commitment to protecting Filipino workers abroad during times of international conflict.
